O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she received a promotion to the 100th round. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the bottom 3, and second lowest. The judges were shocked, and they advised to the audience to vote for Melissa as the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. O'Neil was never in the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performances. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the most youthful winner in the competition's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the President Paul Martin immediately.
